Omani Foreign Minister addresses UK Parliament on regional crises

27 October 2026

The Omani Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, addressed a major parliamentary meeting about the crises in the Middle East today. The talk was hosted by Rt Hon Dame Emily Thornberry MP, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, and the Council for Arab-British Understanding (Caabu).

This took place one week after the highly successful state visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman to the UK. That visit saw a reaffirmation of the historic relationship between the two countries, with agreements to cooperate further in a raft of areas such as green energy, artificial intelligence, data centres, critical minerals and space.

The Foreign Minister reiterated his call for a non-aggression pact in the Gulf. He argued for an inclusive security framework that included all six Gulf Cooperation Council States, Iraq and also Iran. Any mechanism that excluded Iran, he said, would be doomed to fail and “inherently unstable."

Commenting on the meeting Dame Emily Thornberry said, “Having just visited Oman on a parliamentary delegation earlier this month, I can attest to the very strong relations between the two countries.  Sayyid Badr has played an extraordinary role in attempting to facilitate and mediate a US-Iran deal in eight rounds of talks. All of us should warmly support these heroic efforts, as bold and effective diplomacy has to be the way forward to end this crisis.”
