Caabu Press Release: Rishi Sunak must call for ceasefire, full humanitarian access and lifting of siege
19 October 2023
British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak in his visit to Israel and the region, must call for an immediate ceasefire, full humanitarian access into Gaza and a lifting of the Israeli-imposed siege.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic. Prior to the appalling 7 October Hamas attacks on Israel, the humanitarian situation in Gaza was already in crisis as a consequence largely of the 16-year-old Israeli-Egyptian blockade. Today Gaza's health systems are on the verge of collapse. Palestinian civilians on the threshold of dying from dehydration. The water systems need repair but also fuel to clean and pump the water.
Humanitarian aid via the Rafah crossing with Egypt can only make a difference if there is a protracted ceasefire combined with the lifting of the siege. Aid cannot be distributed without fuel and cannot be done whilst under bombardment.
Israel as the occupying power has a legal duty under international law for the well-being of the civilian population of Gaza. It too must turn back on the power and the water, whilst allowing in vital supplies including medication.
Commenting in the media, Chris Doyle Caabu’s Director stated that: “The UN has stated that time is running out for the people of Gaza. When that time runs out it means they will be dying.”
