The day after, 5 April, marks Palestinian Child's Day. Representatives from Addameer, DCIP and War on Want will speak about the surge in torture and other abuse perpetrated by Israeli personnel against Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and detention centres in Israel, as documented by UN experts and Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights organisations.

UN experts and Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights organisations have documented a surge in torture and other abuse perpetrated by Israeli personnel against Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and detention centres in Israel. Torture of Palestinians, including children, in Israeli custody was common long before 7 October but now appears to be the norm.

Four Israel-based NGOs including Adalah, have made a submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture documenting a “severe escalation” in the abuse of detained Palestinians and of actions needed to end it. Addameer, based in the occupied West Bank, reported on 11 deaths in custody in just four months. 40 deaths in custody have now been recorded. The actual figure may be much higher.

About the organisations:

Addameer (Arabic for conscience) Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association is a Palestinian non-governmental, civil institution that works to support Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli and Palestinian prisons. Established in 1991 by a group of activists interested in human rights, the center offers free legal aid to political prisoners, advocates their rights at the national and international level, and works to end torture and other violations of prisoners' rights through monitoring, legal procedures and solidarity campaigns.

Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP) is an independent, local Palestinian child rights organization dedicated to defending and promoting the rights of children living in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Since 1991, we have investigated, documented, and exposed grave human rights violations against children; provided legal services to children in urgent need; held Israeli and Palestinian authorities accountable to universal human rights principles; and advocated at the international and national levels to advance access to justice and protection for children.

As a national section of Defence for Children International (DCI), an international child-rights movement and non-governmental organization established in 1979, we pledge to follow DCI’s mandate to “promote and protect children’s rights in accordance with international standards.” At the same time, DCIP is an autonomous organization that raises its own funds and develops its own programs in response to contextual needs in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

War on Want is a movement of people working to end global poverty and human rights abuses.

They believe a better world is possible. A world in which everyone lives a dignified life free from exploitation, injustice and climate disaster. Poverty is political: the most effective way to end it is by taking collective action to challenge the structures of inequality and injustice.

They campaign in the UK to challenge human rights abusing corporations and governments, to hold those responsible for inequality and poverty to account. We publish in depth research exposing injustice and human rights abuse globally. We work in partnership with grassroots social movements, trade unions and workers’ organisations in the Global South and across the world. We stand in solidarity with all people fighting for their rights.
