In Memoriam: Sir Cyril Townsend

Sir Cyril Townsend (1937-2013)

Caabu is very sad to announce the death of its former Chair and Director, Sir Cyril Townsend MP. He passed away in November after a serious illness. Cyril was Caabu’s Joint Chair for much of the 1980s as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Bexleyheath. He then became Caabu’s part Director in from 1996 to 2002. He did this as a full time role after the 1997 elections when he lost out due to boundary changes.

Throughout his political life as an independent minded MP (1974-1997) he fought for Palestinian rights and for improved relations with the Arab world. Curiously perhaps, his first visit to the Arab world as an MP was with the Conservative Friends of Israel but it pushed him to courageously and tirelessly take up the Palestinian cause.

In 1982 Cyril was a Parliamentary Observer at the Presidential Election in Lebanon and also led a Parliamentary Delegation to Iran in 1988.  He was an E.U. Election Observer for the Elections in Palestine in 1996. For many years, Cyril also wrote a regular column for Al Hayat.

His passion and dedication in everything he did, in particular to the Arab world, will be sorely missed.

Everyone at Caabu sends their condolences to his wife Anita and his two sons.
