Conservative party leadership candidates must honour pledge to hold external Islamophobia inquiry

At the prompting of Sajid Javid, all the candidates in the BBC leadership debate appeared to consent to an “external” inquiry into Islamophobia in the Conservative Party. This is extremely welcome given the sensitivity of the issue and the increasing evidence of how widespread this appears to be. However, there must be no backsliding on this. All the candidates should reaffirm clearly and specifically their commitment to this, how and when they would carry this out, and if they would be prepared to abide by the recommendations of any inquiry. If they will not, they must explain why.
