Leave Sudan alone - Independent on Sunday
Having just come back from a 10-day visit to Sudan, I read Declan Walsh's piece on the possibility of US strikes on the country with a sense of astonishment ("America's blood is up. And they're not stopping at Kabul", Focus, 2 December). Politicians, diplomats and academics both here and in Sudan appear to take the view that the country has been free of terrorism since 1996. There is less agreement on what happened before 1996, and over whether or not there were training camps in Sudan, which is the largest country in Africa and sparsely populated. Four years ago, I spent an hour with Hassan al Turabi; currently he is under house arrest in Khartoum (not in jail). His influence is fading and to attack his supporters as suggested, without any form of trial, would be straightforward state terrorism. Our world needs infinitely more respect for international law, not less, and Sudan needs help to end its tragic civil war, not bombing.
