Background
CAABU was formed in July 1967 to counter a lack of interest and knowledge in the United Kingdom about the Arab world. For over thirty years it has played a major part in creating a much wider awareness of Arab World issues, and a greater public readiness to listen seriously to Arab points of view.

Funding
Membership makes an important contribution to the way the Council raises monies to support the day-to-day running of the organisation. Support from our members and Friends is crucial for us to be able to continue our vital work. It is therefore you the member that supports CAABU (please see 'How can you Help?' for more information about one-off donations).

Aims
We aim to provide our members with a continuous flow of information on topics surrounding the Arab World keeping you up to date and informed in-depth about the latest situations in all the Arab countries.  CAABU also offers its members the opportunity to meet like-minded people whether professional or social and also to give them access to high profile speakers on a regular basis.

• Invitations to lectures and meetings (at least 9 per year, see events)
• Two private members parties a year one at Christmas, and one in the summer

Who is eligible
CAABU is open to anyone with an interest in the Middle East from any country. Politicians, journalists, researchers, and students make up the bulk of our membership, however, we are looking to widen the membership with members from the business and tourism communities.

Types of Membership
Due to membership feedback we have recently expanded our range of options for members and the following membership options are now available.

• Friends of CAABU - annual membership for corporate and active individuals
• Life Member - one off subscription to full membership
• Full Member - annual subscription to full membership
• Overseas Members - designed to open CAABU to a wider membership not confined to the UK
• Student/unwaged Members - discounted membership, we are keen to encourage new members from all areas
