A Light on Ramadan
The Herbert, Coventry and Coventry City Circle
"A Light on Ramadan", is a digital projection on the side of Coventry's Herbert Museum and Gallery, each evening at sunset, the same moment when Muslims break their fast. It has been created by urban artist Mohammed Ali and young Muslims from Coventry. Mohammed Ali specialises in aerosol art inspired by Arabic calligraphy, and he has combined this with digital animations to create a urban styled, fast moving projection. Mohammed worked with local young Muslims to explore themes of Ramadan that are universal, and which can encourage understanding between religions and cultures.
The launch on 30 September, 6pm-8pm, combines an art opening, and the breaking of the fast with food and prayers. Coventry's first Muslim Lord Mayor, Cllr Shabir Ahmed, will officially open the artwork at The Herbert on Saturday 30th September. The event is free and open to all and will give visitors an insight into the cutting edge of Islamic art in Britain, and in the creativity of young Muslims in Coventry.
