With Syrian political forces failing to present clear strategies about resolving the crisis in the country, it is vital that Syrian civil society is able to play a leading role. Civil society can offer solutions to the crisis, and take key decisions on the problems facing the country, where politics and diplomacy fails. Civil society activism inside Syria is increasing at a rate much faster than political activism. An emerging civil society in Syria is playing an important stabilising role in this crisis.  It is producing organic home-grown solutions reflecting the deep roots of the conflict in Syria and the genuine needs of Syrian society.

Professor Mary Kaldor and Dr. Rim Turkmani were key organisers in a recent conference in Beirut:  "Towards a strategic solution to the Syrian crisis: The role of civil society". A large number of Syrian civil society figures from across the political spectrum were in attendance at the Beirut conference, representing forty different organisations.  Professor Mary Kaldor and Dr. Rim Turkmani will offer their thoughts on the possible role this society can now play in bringing peace back to Syria. At this public briefing, they will discuss the views heard from the Syrians who attended the conference.  The conference was covered by BBC Newsnight.

Seats will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
